There are actually 4 screws in my ashtray, two low, two high, and un screw your stick shift knob if your a manual, not sure about autos. Don't forget to disconnect the wires to the cigarette...

Are you hearing grinding in your down shifts or just not sticking, does very much sound syncronizer rings. Bad synchros would also explain why double clutching his helping because its slowing...

The Metal HG won't help you, if you don't keep the same compression it might even hurt. Headers will help but be sure to do your whole exhaust out, not just part. good luck.
