I wonder how long he had it connected in reverse... long enough & it's possible he could have melted insulation somewhere in the loom causing the problem you now have :/ There's some good wiring...

Possibly just coincidence that you noticed it just after the new stereo, I've heard of headlamp stalks failing & doing stuff like that too so possibly the problem's in the switch?

Cool thought it sounded strange. Probably just a newer/better turbo would be the single biggest difference to throttle response then IMO (and free flowing exhaust from the turbo back of course)....

Hard to diagnose noises through just a description unfortunately, much easier to hear the sound in person but if it's just happening over bumps as suggested by your checking of ball joints/bushes etc...

Agreed, plus with the oil soaking it's had recently now is the best time as the 25+ years of gunk buildup is soft and easily got rid of at the moment. A few thousand miles of no leak & it'll be baked...
