Hydraulic clutch. Check for oil along the floorboard behind and below the pedal, along the firewall and under the master cylinder and under the slave cylinder on the lower left side of the bell housing. Hopefully that's it, the other possibilities that come to mind are a lot harder to fix such as a stuck throwout bearing. I suppose it's also possible the fork came off the throwout bear or broke; I don't know how likely that is though.
EDIT: You know, given the sound you heard you might also want to make sure the connecting rod that runs through the fire wall and connects to the pedal is still attached and that the pin which holds it in hasn't fallen out.
