Default Help Fixiing Power Steering

Since I bought my supra i havent had power steering, but its kinda getting annoying and im thinking about attempting to fix it. I dont know where to start. Whats the first few things I should check before I start replacing things? The fluid is about half full.

i would start by topping off the fluid. unless you have a leak. after that i would look at all the hoses. im pretty sure they haven't been replaced. so they will be rock solid most likely. does it kind of whine when you turn your wheels?

You may have to look into getting a new pump and rack, but before that check all your lines and fluid. While the engine is off, try to see if the pumps' pulley has any play in any direction. If it does, you may need a new pump.

Good luck.

Also, look to see how "clean" the fluid is. If your replacing the hoses you should flush the power steering pump.

If I were you, I would take the car to a dealership or good (trusted) mechanic and get an inspection done. Mine cost $130.00 and allowed me to at least map out what I need to do better. I like 2nd and even third opinions because I hate sitting in a broken down vehicle thinking that I screwed up.. lol

Well for starters ..... Make sure the fluid is dextron and not power stearing fluid...

If its red then you are ok... Fill to top.. leave cap off and run car... look and see if you see the fluid moving.. if its not moving then the pump is prob bad...

yea i just need to determine if the previous owner disconnected it which i think he did. The fluid isnt red so its either really old or the wrong stuff in there. Im going to flush it and replace it first and see where that leads me.

I havent had a chance to work on the power steering yet because I have been fixing all the crap wiring the previous owner did. Today I removed the subwoofer wiring and then went to start the car and it wouldnt start turns out he tapped my push button start into the 12 volt for the amp..i just dont understand some people lol

My subwoofer was wired "professionally" by someone the previous owner paid. The thing that bugs me most is that the "professional" couldn't figure out how to run it thru the firewall, so they ran it along the driver door post.
It bugs me.. but I will live with it.. lol. However, he did have a toggle switch that locked the TEMS in 3 light mode (or stiff). I wouldn't mind rehooking that up.
