Default About to buy an early '86 - questions before buying

Hey everyone, I'm new here - this is my first post. I've been talking to a guy on Craigslist, wants to sell me his early 86 MarkII for $400. Blown engine, but the body looks in alright shape, except for a little rust. Want it for a project car. Pictures below.

But first, a couple of questions:
Most importantly, just from the pictures, does this seem like an okay deal?
Are parts hard to find for the Mark II's?
Anything important I should know before I probably end up spending all my money on this thing?

Thanks!

i would buy that right now for 400 dollers!!!!!

of course im a finatic...

u could probly find a cheap 5m-ge and put it in (depending on your mechanical skill lvl) yourself in a day!

or u could upgrade to the 7m-ge or 7m-gte, u would need a wiring harness spawwed in and the 7m's are more pricy (around my place 300-600$)
for a running ready to go in 7m

5m-ge i usually see them for sale around 50-200$

YES parts are difficult to find for this car, for smaller things your best bet is to buy them online from the celicasupra.com forums, they got good venders there just 4 mk2s

good luck hope to see you join in on the forums, this is my favorite car in the world!! (and we need alot more activity in the mk2 section)

Default My 2 cents....

Do a wide body. Mine is not even close to where I would say it's done but to this day have folks stop and ask what is it. Nice to be unique. Wide body is the way to go. If to choose again I'll be doing a '90 model but like the '87 front end instead.

Default Here is my 86 mk II , bad motor, not sure what to do now

I just bought this 86 Supra, only thinking it had a minor oil leak and a rough idle. Took it to a friend, ( who is a former toyota mechanic) , and he said 3 of the six cylinders are only at about 50 PSI compression. SUCKS! I was hoping to only put about a grand into this car and have something unique and fun to drive for the summer. Now I have been calling around for remanufactured motors, and the cheapest I could find was $4000.00!! YIKES! The car has 157000 mi. on it but it is clean inside and out, except for some rust on the rocker panels and some spots on the sunroof. I was planning on fixing the rust myself and doing the brakes, but 4Gs for a rebuilt?? I did find a used motor with 70000 miles on it that will come with a 6 month 6000 mile warranty, for $1750.00. I really don't know what to do at this point. Not sure if I want to put that kind of money into a car this old. What do you guys think?? Thanks for any help.

$300 ???? I haven't found an engine even close to that price. I have been talking to several salvage yards and they have been on the internet looking for me. They haven't found anything for under $1750 ????. WTF?

dude salvage places are probly the most expensive because there TRYING TO MAKE MONEY they all get paid to work there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

find some one privatly selling a hunk of shit supra with decant 5m-ge engine, and swap it...

1750?
thats almost a brand new engine...

http://forums.celicasupra.com/showthread.php?t=13132

this guy can make you 190 crank hp and a 3.0 liter 6m-ge engine replacment engine for under 1500 i believe...

check it out, if a scrap yard wants 1750 for an engine thats been sitting for ever tell them to get f*ed... there not even worth dick on the market,
im currently trying to give just a block away(no cylinder head) for free and no one will take it.....

plus why do you have low compressing?? if its a BHG it should be easy to just replace a gasket rather than the whole engine...

Hey, thanks man, I was hoping you'd say that! That looks like a really good deal for the 6mge engine. Do you know anyone that has gone thru them and installed one? I will keep hunting. Thanks again, this is the kind of info. I was looking for!

if you go to the celicasupra.com and under venders you will find alot of parts for these cars. there seems to be many satisfied people with positive comments. check it out for yourself

but remember all these items you need to install yourself or get a mechanic to do for you.

or you could look in your local classified adds and buy one!
good luck searching you may have to look for many months as the car is not popular as others.
