I agree with 3.0trd. I was using the timing mark on the harmonic balancer to tell me when the cylinder was up, but needed the finger on the hole to tell me if i was the compression stroke.

Still sounds like the ABS sensor connector. When I replaced the transmission in my '88, I was surprised that the connector was that far up. If I had time to crawl up under there, I'd take pictures....

The finger on the spark plug hole trick worked...

The finger on the spark plug hole trick worked for me when I had a car I needed to pull the distributor out of, but not the valve cover or the timing cover. Worked like a charm.

Since I've never rebuilt a transmission before, should I even attempt to rebuild the transmission from my '88 Supra, or leave it to experts. It is a W-series 5 speed gearbox from an '88 N/A Supra.
