I had to replace the rear glass in my car. The actual seal is a butyl rubber gasket that glues down the glass. The rubber lip around the trim is more of a wind deflector. You could seal it with windshield RTV, like Chambers, or just peel the black poly coating off, and paint the steel black. I used Krylon Ultra Flat black on mine.

Aww, come on now. lol. My hatch was holding water after rain and a car wash, so I had to do some thing, its not very pretty, but its functional. I plan to do something a little more "professional" after I repaint the car.
