well from stats the mk3 was only produced from 86.5
prior to that was the mk2.. which we suspect you have.. maybe it was a registration screw up? got a pic? if it's mk2.. watch the rust in the rear hatch, under the rear quarter windows and in the front bar etc none of the years were particularly problematic all 7m mk3's blow a head gasket eventually lol umm... i would go and inspect it then post back what you saw initially
