Default Transmission Trouble?

Hey guys! I am a newb to the forum and was looking for some help in troubleshooting the problem that my supra is going through. I have a 91 Turbo 7M-GTE AUTOMATIC TRANS, 86,168 original miles that is almost bone stock[Ive only added a FIPK Air intake and decent cat back exhaust] Here's the deal, on cold starts, the car will not shift normally. It will usually just kind of skip through 1st gear while the rpms continue to go up[at which point, i let off the gas] I have to ease the car slowly for it to shift[It shifts rather rough though] After about maybe 5 minutes of easing through the gears, the car finally begins to shift nicely at about 2000 rmps for the 1st gear and so on for the rest of the gears. Ive checked the transmission fluid and the dipstick reads perfectly and the fluid is not burnt. It does not leak any fluid anywhere so as a novice in the realm of auto mechanics, Im kind of lost here. Any expertise on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time guys, I look forward to reading your replys.

Well sounds like you did what you could check but you might also want to try draining the fluid, replacing the filter and see if there are any metal filings, well more than usual anyway. Sounds like it needs to be warmed up to function properly, so it sounds good just not flowing well when cold.

After that, take it to an expert, if there are such things anymore.

by the sounds of it your transmission is dying on you

hardcore slipping when cold

in order for you to drive it around (if required) you will need to let your transmission warm up for about 5mins or so or if you live in a flat area ease her round there till the tranny warms up

i had to do this with my old supra, transmission was annialated and warm up was compulsary to get up the hill to go anywhere lol

also check the kickdown cable and ensure its adjusted correctly for line pressure

same thing happened to my brothers 89 chevy silverado . . .it did that in the cold but would stop after a while of running. it only did it some of the time when it was really cold outside in the morning from sittin all night. check and see if the transmission fluid is dark(er) than it should be, and try changing it. when it got warmer out (later on in the season) it stopped doing it for some reason and we havent had trouble since

p.s. this was like a year ago^

I have an 89 w/auto. (which works good), but have investigated it so when the day comes, I have an understanding of it.

Both of the above answers should be followed. You (anyone) can pull the trans pan yourself and put a filter in. I did mine 2 mo. ago. $25.

80k miles on it. Not a speck of metal, and just a smearing of varnish on the bottom of the pan. The screen looked totally clean.

I've done this to about 100 Toyotas when I was at the dealership, and they all looked like mine.

Toyotas don't disenigrate like fords and chevys.

You'll need about 3-4 qts of dex3 to fill back up. Try it out after that.

Also, there are machines now that hook into the cooler lines and they flush out ALL the fluid. We charge $140 for that service.

Try the filter thing and see if it helps. A rebuild job here costs $1500.
