Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a 6MGE is essentially an early 7M block/rotating assembly with a late 5M cylinder head/efi.
I know bore and stroke are the same 6M and 7M, can't confirm the compression ratio will be though. I believe it should work as a replacement with mild modification, may need to change stuff like the timing gear on the crank of the 6M, dunno for sure though
