86.5-88 (and some 89's) have different fuel injectors, oil pan/sump, motor mounts, and I'm sure other little things I'm spacing on. 86.5-88's are also balanced externally, whereas 89+'s are balanced internally. If you have a 5 spd, this means you will need a different flywheel if you get an early 7MGE. The 89+'s also were given a lower redline, probably due to the different balancing.
Basically, any 7MGE should drop in. You just may need to swap several components over from your original engine, and make any other adjustments as necessary. kadinz and wstanek, the OP stated in the first post that they were looking at ordering a 7MGE, not a different engine.
