Hey, I posted a few weeks ago about my supra. I pulled the motor and found out it was rod knock. It looks like I need a new short block. I put all the prices together and it looks around 2000 to rebuild. Should I rebuild or should I just buy a used 7mgte? They are around 1000 to buy and it has a 3 month warranty. What do you guys/girls think? Rebuild or Replace?

find a low mileage used 7mgte for sure. then you can save your money and get a big ass turbo and fuel management system

$2k to rebuild


damnnnn
you buying forged pistons and rods??? LOL

shouldn't cost you anywhere near that to get the crank ground, new bearings, rings and get the clearances and gaps checked by your machine shop

I just rebuilt my N/A engine. It cost close to $700.00 to bore it, crank turned, new stock oversized pistons, deck resurfaced/with timing cover, and complete gasket set. Man the gasket set was the most expensive part, $160.00!!! New oil pump drive bearings, freeze plugs, main and rod bearings.

I built the engine myself, so I saved a bundle on labor. Sounds like you are being quoted a price for the R and R the engine and rebuild. I would not take a chance on just sticking a used engine in the car, but if you trust someone to take a look at the bearings and can somehow verify a compression check you could feel a lot more certain as to the shape of a used engine.

I vote rebuild and then get another 200,000 miles out of it!!!

You can also get the head checked out too. It probably needs new valve guide seals at least, but a valve job wouldn't hurt.

On the motor it looks like the piston walls are messed up pretty bad and Ill need to rebore it. I dunno if its to the point where I would have to buy oversized forged pistons or not. So I sent the block into the shop and he was going to rebore it and clean it up for 150. I called him a couple days later and he said that the crank was grounded out and we needed a new one. He also said the price of machining the block was 500! I pretty much have to replace everything but the rods.My brother,me, and my dad are going to be doing all the work if we rebuild it. So im not even adding in the labor cost.
The rebuild the cost list :
Forged Pistons/rings-700
Rods- 0 (old ones still look okay)
bearings - 200
Crankshaft- 400
Machining the block - 500
MHG - 150
Am I getting overpriced stuff or what?

those prices seem pritty typical and for the most part are quantifyable.

Clean block $25.00
install intermediate shaft bearings $15.00
Grind crank $60.00
Bore cylinders $10.00 a hole $60.00
Con rod bearings $29.00
Main bearings $44.00
Thrust washer set $8.00
Pistons and rings , stock but oversized $36.00 ea. $218.00
Gaskets $144.00
Head gasket $13.00

Total around $700.00

Forged pistons are nice and if you are going to push it then a necessity. Sound high on some stuff but you are putting together an engine that will put out more than my N/A. I still push 6000 rpm though and I believe my engine will hold for quite a while, not with nitrous probably........but that is for another day.
