Default To rebuild or not to rebuild that is the question

What up? I drive, well not really I don't ever get to drive her, I own an 88 supra turbo 5speed. I've had it for about 9 months and may have been able to put 20 miles on it. I've had to change the head gasket, timing belt, starter, wires, plugs, knock sensors, battery, and probably some other crap I cant remeber. N E way I cant keep her on the road. Everytime I go for a drive he breaks down. Right at the moment I have the head back off cause theres a rod knocking or wrist pin or possibly a bent rod. My question is this if I have to redue the bottomend with rods, bearings, pistons, it would be cheaper to buy a jdm engine off ebay shipped and everything about 1200. But is this the smarter way to go? And what about a 1jz engine what all mods would I have to do to perform this swap? Any info would help I know its gonna cost any way I go but I want to find the best for way for the least amount of money still be able to smoke civics whenever I go out. Also keep in mind that if I rebuild the bottom end I will be going with larger pistons and I would be rebuilding the head. If you know of any place where I could get new parts cheap let me know. Thanks

Default Sorry to hear that

I don't have any tech info for you, I just wan't to express my condolences. I saw the pictures of your re-build and was very impressed. With all the work you put into it, it must be a real downer not being on the road. I also want to thank you for help you have given me along the way. It was very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Scruffboy

Only thing i can say is you dont always know what you get with a JDM. Mine showed up at my door w/ a blown head.

Also if you rebuild your engine you will be able to up the boost on her with confidence becuase you know all the internals are in great shape

Thats true if I rebuilt it I would know that everything was new and in good condition. My main thing is cost. I am startin a new job and I'll have a lot more money available to me I just don't want to dump a lot of money in this car if all I'm gonna be doin is fixing it. This is my first supra and I've always wanted one but now I'm starting to second guess that dream. Does anyone know how much to rebuild? Like a full rebuild new piston, rod bearings, valves, cams. Cause if I go that way Im gonna go all out. I just cant help but think that a 1jzgte with 5speed tranny, engine, igniter, ecu, and harness comes to about 2200. Buying new rods alone is gonna set me back 600+ let alone 700+ for pistons and then I might not be able to reuse my crank if its a bearing thats bad. Thanks for your advice though and any more will be appreciated.

Get out now while you still can lol.....

I am probably approaching 10k spent and still have alot to do in preperation for turning up the boost. Such as oil cooler/ tranny cooler/ new rad/ profec e01/ wideband O2 sensor... Rest of my car is ready for it. Emanage / New head job / Upgraded turbo / Tune'd up / New tires / Cleaned up / Hard IC pipes / New vaccum lines / new rad hoses / Full 3in exh all way back w/ divorced downpipe / New battery / Rewired knock sensors list goes on thats just what i can think of off top of my head.....

Sure ok... i could of gone this route ....
1. New head, 800 ?? est mhg 200-300 apr studs what 100? + machine labor
2. Upgraded CT-26 to 57trim from bigaron over at sm 500
3. manual boost gauge 25$ and turned it up to fuel cut....
4. Pray you everything in your car is working as it should. And hope you dont fuck anything up.....

Have you checked the codes your supra throws? Check out FAQ section outlines how to do it.....

The only code my car has ever had is when I broke the knock sensor it blinked a code of 52 which is a knock sensor signal but when I replaced it the code went away. anyone with ideas on how much estimated cost to just rebuild? Like I said i'd like to keep the car I just want to go the cheapest route possible. To me 10 grand is alot different than 2 grand. I dont want to put 10 grans in this car if it came down to that i would just find another nicer one that someone else has sooped up and done all the work to.
