Another term for the center bore adapters is hub centric rings or hub centric adapter rings (may be a North American colloquial term)... and yes, they are important. Also, rims with a smaller center bore than Bill mentioned will not work on the car without machining or.... <gulp> spacers to serve as adapters (not recommended).
