Default over heating problems, need help

hi im new to the supra scene i've always been a talon fan till i got my supra!
but ne how i just had the head gasket replaced on my 7mgte and its still over heating at an idle it won't over heat it can sit for hours but as soon as i head down the road it will over heat, now i was told that if the timing was advanced too much on one cam that it would cause the car to over heat but i have noticed at idle the car has a slight miss to it but im pretty sure the wires are factory but im not sure.

any help would be greatly appricated

First I have a few questions for you:

Did you replace the radiator or thermostat?

Did you check the water pump or the fan clutch?


If you want to check to see if the cams are in line with each other, pop the thermostat housing off and then the cam cover. Next you want to turn the crank to TDC, there are timing marks on the cover behind the crank pulley, and there is a mark on the pulley as well. Align the mark on the pulley to the 0 deg mark on the cover, then look at the cam gears, the three holes on both should be in the same direction, and the upper holes should have a dowel pin in it. If there not perfectly up, then that could cause some ill effects, but I don't think it would cause that.

i put almost every thing new on it new water pump, timing belt, thermostat, i took the manuel fan off and put fal fans on it, new hoses just about every thing i can think of i replaced, but i noticed that when it overheated the first time the top rad. hose was hard as a rock almost so i took it out and cut the center out of it so it would still have some restrictions but then it took it about an hour before it overheated,,, i really don't know much about these cars lol.

i am freaking confused, and nobody around where i live really knows much about turbo charged imports,,,,

So the radiator is new as well? If no, then I would get a new one, make sure you do not get the one with plastic top and bottom, they tend to explode.

I'm not quite following you about the rad hose, i just don't quite understand what you mean by cutting it, have any pictures. It's not silicone is it?

no i cut the middle out of the thermostat, i forgot to put that n there lol,,, and the upper rad. hose was almost hard as a rock. no i haven't put a new rad. on it but i will b getting a aluminum one shortly... but i had the rad. flushed out, but im still getting a ne rad.

Well, in my experience and word from others, new thermostats sometimes fail, I would try that first. If you are wanting to go with a aluminum rad, make sure you do not go with the cheap ones, they will not bolt up with the stock mounts. If its going to be a while, then I would see about putting the stock fan and clutch assembly back in, with a new thermostat. Hope this helps, good luck.
