there is little difrance between 82-86, im using an older head on my 84 right now.
make sure to use a timing light and jump T and E1 Ignition Timing is 10 degree's @ BTDC @ T and E1 good luck

I was thinking of electrical changes. Toyota changed the ECU construction in the middle there and the diagnostic connectors changed along with a fair amount of wiring... I just don't know all the details.
I just looked it up and Toyota switched the MKII to their TCCS system in '83. So it's probably '82 and some '83 (L-Type vs P-Type). If anyone has more info or info to the contrary I'd like to know, I'm just going off of a quick survey of Google and CelicaSupra.

82, has the 145hp and 150ft/lbs of torque 8.8:1 compression 7.72 gearing. vacuum advanced dist.
86 has 161hp and 169ft/lbs of torque differant style tps and egr knock sensor 5speeds:4.30 gears auto:4.10 gears electronic dist. i am still looking for more on wiring differences...
