I'm not too fimilar with 1JZ but I believe the parts for it are cheaper to aquire in comparsion to upgading a 2JZ. If budget is not too big an issue, try to find a reliable or rebuilt 1JZ to swap in in order to have a worry free power source. I've seen many people spending more time by the track side fixing cars instead of having seat time practicing drifting~~
Engine wise, make sure your cooling system is sufficient enough. When you drift in a smaller places; the heat soak is really the main issue that causes over-heating. So a big volume radiator and higher pressure cap are really good investments. Also, ARC offers a "Radiator Breather Valve" that provides you an additional insurance for cooling. Electric fans are good but it's up to you whether to upgrade it or not; many cars work just fine with factory fans of course. Just remember, do everything that helps in cooling the engine bay will be my best suggestion to you~~

ive got the same problem you are at. Im just going to sell my N/A and pick up the mk3 turbo. Already has the R154, and LSD, plus that TURBO!!! I drove my buddies stock mk3 turbo and it was much much easier to drift than my N/A.
