87 targa turbo 5-speed build
got an 87 turbo w/ 5spd and a targa top.
engine pulled the original 7mgte, tore it down to find a cracked cylinder and warped head. just bought a jdm 7mgte, and will swap sensors and whatnots from the old 7m. i also messed up the wiring harness and motor mounts while pulling out the oringinal motor. ive replaced to motor mounts. as for the body:little bit of rust under driverside door moldin. someone bent in the passenger fender and my bro tried to pop the door open and f*ucked up the fender, i fixed it. passenger side molding isnt any good. front mud flaps are rusted. has a cracked tail light. license plate lights are missing. someone painted corner lights while i guess painting the bumper. needs new paint job, and tires i have a stage 3 clutch and pressure plate along with new vaccum lines ready to go in will take pictures as i progress. |

That sucks about the cracked cylinder and warped head, I feel your pain.
What site did you order that motor from? Whats up with the egr valve on that JDM motor? I like the starter just hanging there. I was planning on buying a JDM 7M and building it to run close to 1 bar of boost. I found a site that sells them for $700 + shipping. |
i got it over ebay for $1000 including ship right to my house from japan star motor inc. the jdms dont have an egr, so its just blocked off. just got one lined up. should be getting it sometime next week i suppose. ya they just put the starter right up on the cut up motor mount.

that one pic with all the garbage in your car makes me want to vomit.:barf:
well most of the junk in there is the old motor and parts that needed to be removed. its just i dont have any where else to put them. id put them in my room but i dont have any room in it
its cool just make sure you post some afterward pics of it all cleaned up.:)
ya im gonna try to restore it and im gonna have to sell it
why do you have to sell it??
im gonna sell it because as much as i love supras, they are expensive cars and i dont have the money for it. gonne restore this one as best as possible and try to get 3-4k for it. eventually im gonna get a mkiv though so not all is lost
im gonna try and get the motor in this up coming weekend. ill try to get pics
how hard is it to swap the jdm 7mgte, i just bought one from jdmmotors.com so I,m looking forword to putting it in!!! any info would be great thanx.
i havent done it yet, as im waiting for helping hands, and a good weekend without rain... prior to installiation it hasnt been to hard. when i got mine, put it on the stand, took off all the cut wires, hoses, etc. then swapped out oil sending unit, put on egr, retorqued head, and put on diff engine mounts. oh im also swapping throttle bodies as the jdm and u.s. spec are diff. im gonna try to get a ffim (front facing intake manifold) from ron off of supramania, and maybe get a larger tb, till then ill stick with the u.s. tb.
im also taking the ac out of the car; im young, doesnt work in my NA so i know ill survive, and it will be easier to take out while the motor is mia. as of now im just removing the lines, pump, and condenser, every part in the engine bay. im gonna keep them of course in case i ever change my mind or decide to sell the car. ill try to take pics of me putting it in... this up coming weekend looks promising, kinda cool but sunny |
thanx for the input, looking forward to seeing new pics of the swap.
so it looks like its gonna happen tomorrow. w00t w00t. ill try to remember to take pics every once in a while.
nice good luck were did you buy the engine from?
got the engine off of ebay for 1000dollars and free shipping to my house. cant remember the seller though. i know i have papers somewhere if you really want to know who it was
no worrys just wondering
lookin good what kind of clutch did you buy?
nice job with the car , I'm still waiting for my motor from osakajdmmotors. its been a week. So how long did it take to get the motor at your house!? well keep us updated on the progress.
the clutch is from pro clutch, got it off of ebay like a year and a half ago and its been sitting for a while. its a stage 3 and payed like 300, and came with pilot bearing and release bearing. i figured its stage 3, will prolly hold anything i throw at it and for only 3 hundred, why not?
for the motor, it took about a week and half for my money to clear because i bought it before i transferred my money to paypal, took about a week or so for the place to process the order, then like another week to get the motor... something like that cant exactly remember. |
tranny pics
before http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...021061638a.jpg after http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...1022061242.jpg well didnt get the tranny in today, looked like rain and the family was all home so we went to olive garden |
well i was looking at my fly wheel last week and decided i didnt want to put that disgusting looking thing in with my new clutch so i just bought a fidanza lite weight alum flywheel. 11lbs, oh ya... only concern is it being alum, just hope i dont get any warpage... its expected to get here thursday, ill take some pics...
got my flywheel in today and its pretty what you think?
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...1102061817.jpghttp://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...102061817a.jpghttp://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...1102061818.jpg you can feel the difference in weight and as you can see, it just looks better i also got http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...1102061750.jpg and http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...1102061837.jpg if you cant really see them they are stickers, one on the left is the shocker, on the right it says boost: my anti drug |
that was a good buy there. So when are you going to be putting it all in? one more question, how hard is it to take the motor out of your car, and is there any tips you could hook me up with about it? thanks alot and keep us up to date on your progress!
im gonna try and bolt up the tranny in the morning but i dunno if it will happen; i dont have a garage and its supposed to be in the low 50's... plus i gotta find the tranny-to-engine bolts as i took it apart over a year ago. pulling the engine was kinda a pain in the ass, but once we knew to unbolt the clutch plate from the flywheel it was a breeze. one tip i wish i could go back and do was label everything... and be specific, it will make you life so much easier when you goto reassemble.
i got my jdm 7mgte!!!!
it finaly came, it is so clean and looks like a great motor! first things first, mhg!!!
i tried to put up pic but cant seem to work it. if you could let me know that would be great! |

UPDATE!!!: finally had good weather, and enough time to put on tranny, 5 months after i started doing it... anyways tomorrow im gonna hook up drive shaft and try to finish my wiring harness, then check continuity of it to make sure my splices will work. ill more pics if i remember
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0018.jpg this is my new slave cylinder vs old one http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0017.jpg |
Oh man, looks like you have quite the project ahead of you.. as do I.
Sure wish mine had the targa top... good luck with everything |
thanks. ive actually got some updates on progress, just havent gotten around of posting them
ok here we go, this is what ive been up to over the last couple weeks. i got the tranny installed, clutch in, pressure plate bolted up. I then moved to the engine, as i just cant wait any longer to hear this thing run. so i got the wiring harness finished, got my fingers crossed that it will work :o . so once i put that in, i hooked up all the connectors and hooked up the fuel lines. this week i started on the rest. put on the throttle body, ic pipes, intake filter, according hose. i also replaced as many vacuum lines as i possibly could. i got prolly like 90% of them so im happy. i put the radiator in today, and put on the lower hose along with the power steering belt, alternator/water pump belt. i have no ac so i have no ac belt, i can survive in a hard top with no ac so i think ill survive with a targa top :grinking: . so all thats left with the engine it the fan, and up rad hose. i also need to fill up with fluids. ive seemed to mislocated my fan shroud so ill be in the market for a new one. well on with pics....
oh ya i also replaced the spark plug with ngk iridiums, and the wires with ngks. back to the pics, enjoy http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0045.jpg http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0046.jpg http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0047.jpg http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0048.jpg heres a pic of all the stuff ive put in this week and the hoses ive removed http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0050.jpg |
ah remember another thing, if you look at the top three pics, the thermostat housing is different from the one in the fourth pic. i had extra vacuum lines, then remembered this is a 89+ jap engine ( dont know which doesnt have the vacuum lines to the thermostat, 89+ or jspec) so i switched with my old stat housing. oh on the subject of jspec, appearently the metal coolant hose that goes around the back of the engine is different... the driver side is capped off. this means i cant run a line to the heater core... doh! ya im a dumbass. so instead of pulling the engine again, im just gonna by pass the heater core for now, winter is a long ways off... just hope it dont snow here any more... who am i kidding this car wont be ready for a couple of months... any ways, so instead of the heater core, i went from the back of the head to the part of the pipe that is supposed to blocked off on our cars. its the same pipe so it should work... i hope...
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0051.jpg http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0053.jpg http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k9...z/100_0054.jpg |
haha another post, i also ordered a new bushing and seat bushing for my shifter. its actually a truck bushing. i saw this on supramania forums and that my bushing looked shot so i went ahead and got this. ill post pics if i remember
Yes that rig you got on your water by-pass pipe will work, don't worry about that.
Man that thing is dirty, and corroded. Did you replace the timing belt? What happened to the other nut for the O2 sensor? Otherwise, nice job :uh: LOL kidding! :bigthumb: |
lol ya it is dirty. once its one the road ill have money to start cleaning it up, just want it running! i havent replaced the timing belt, i checked it, it looked good but we will see... as for the nut on the o2... i cant remember exactly lol, i think i was gonna take off the elbow??? than stopped??? i cant remember it was a while ago...
ok so i think ive got it figured out. sprayed some carb cleaner in the intake and it fired a couple of times and died. this means a fuel problem. i am getting fuel at the cold start injector so its not the pump or filter. im gonna take the injectors out and have them cleaned.
last night i ordered a new clutch master cylinder as my pedal wont pop back. |
