Casey's RHD Swap/Build

WELCOME TO MY OBSESSION

I'm restoring my '87 Supra before I start to make modifications. I started with the interior. I did a color change in the interior. It started out as grey and I changed it to black/red.

Completely stock grey interior before I started.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...162_3_full.jpg

This one is of my old door panels. I covered the insert with black vinyl and red stitching. But I ended up getting new ones and redoing the whole thing.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...162_9_full.jpg

Dash is painted black along with the red air vents. I didn't really finish painting the air vents red. Theres still a few spots on it that are still black.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...62_14_full.jpg

This is the armrests in the backseat. You can see the original color and then the black.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...62_27_full.jpg

These are the door panels in the middle of the color change....
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...62_86_full.jpg

And after the color change.....
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...62_87_full.jpg

This is the rear quarter panel window thingy, whatever it's called. Lol
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...162_6_full.jpg

This is the center console and armrest that I recovered with black vinyl and red stitching w/ extra foam. It was well worth it. It's much more comfortable that it was.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...162_7_full.jpg

This is the new carpet compared to the old one.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...62_39_full.jpg

Almost completed interior. I need to get new seats or recover the ones I have in black.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...62_67_full.jpg

And I put new red LED's in my gauges and key ring. The lights in the gauges are kind of dull because the battery wasnt charged. I did it while the engine was blown so the battery wasnt charged because I left the lights on for a few days.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...62_36_full.jpg
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...62_37_full.jpg

Thats all for now. I will update when I get more things done. I'm ordering a new 7M-GTE in about a month or so.

tonystarks 05-01-2006 04:30 AM

looking good

What did you use to paint the interior? I see that the red is vinyl/leather but how about the dash? How do you change the LED? Where did you buy the bulbs? Your interior is looking great, keep me posted on progress!

dcrusupra 05-02-2006 04:13 AM

I used Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric spray paint for everything. And that red is actually the spray paint also. It works really well. It came out a lot better than most of my family thought it would have. They have low expectations for my car. They think a 19 yr old kid cant build a 600hp car. I will prove them all wrong http://www.supramania.com/forums/ima...lies/evil2.gif. And you will all see my progress. I used WLED 5-LED Wide Angle LED and 74 Wedge Base LED bulbs from superbrightleds.com. Thats the exact title of the bulbs by the way. To change them, you just take out the gauge cluster and twist out the bases of the bulbs and pull the old bulbs out and replace the old bulbs with the new ones.

sounds good

good luck on the build. I just bought my supra and its alittle more difficult than my past cars ie; civic hatches. I had an 11 second hatcha and it took way too much work. My friend bought a supra and put half the money that I had into my hatch and he runs low 12's but looked a million times better tailwhipping! haha damn your interior looks fawkin nice. I'm in the process of just getting my mk3 running decent so I can drive it daily. I'm locating new replacement oem parts but am having a hell of a time. Its fun though. Better than busting a nut when I find what I'm looking for! CarbonFX has a lot of cf for the mk3 . I love their hood but its like 700 bucks.... shiet I'm cheap! I just located a mint stock hood so I'm sticking with that. haha what kind of mods do you have to do to fit those 10'' tires in the frnt?

NYTRYDR 05-02-2006 10:10 PM

Great car !

Wow, I am really impressed with the work you've done. It looks fantastic !
Good luck with your build .

damdog05 05-03-2006 01:40 AM

i needed to do something like what was done with the paint. so i went to my local auto parts store and bought some of the dupli-color vinyl and fabric paint. it worked amazingly well. thanks for the tip and i would most definately recommend this.

Ah, good catch. I guess thats what I get for posting at around 1am after a long day of work. Lol. And yea, the dupli-color spray paint works insanely well for just spray paint. Not sure how long it will last but it shouldnt matter much because it's only going to be a weekend car if that.

And....

I think I found new seats to put into it. It's the ones that come in the GT V6 Tiburons. Its black with red stitching and whatnot. Problem is they have airbags in them. Which will make them big money to get. So if they come without airbags I might pick up a pair. If they do then I'll just say forget it and recover my seats. I was thinking microfiber lol. But that would be crazy expensive.

These are them.....
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/caked/IMG_0063.jpg

Very comfortable and feels very well made. Since I work at an oil change place I get to test out a lot of seats while driving the cars into the bays. http://www.supramania.com/forums/ima...s/biglaugh.gif

I used WLED 5-LED Wide Angle LED and 74 Wedge Base LED bulbs from superbrightleds.com. One is 3 down from the top and the other is the 12th one down. You just pull the bulbs out of the bases and replace them with the LEDs.

Supra2NR 05-09-2006 01:48 AM

correct me if im wrong i jus did this today nd forgot already cuz i was really pissed off about the results of what i did , so its 4 of the wled wide angle , and one 74 wedge right?

dcrusupra 05-09-2006 02:09 AM

Yup. Thats it.

dcrusupra 05-13-2006 11:22 PM

Well, I called a few dealerships. A Q45 TB w/ TPS is $598. GT V6 Tiburon driver and passenger seats are $3000. And I also like the new Mazda3 seats. They are very comfortable and stylish. They are $1500 for both. So the Mazda3 seats are a definitely a possibility. But they are ungodly heavy because of the airbag system they put in it.

Levi1717 05-15-2006 12:38 AM

do you replaced the fabric on the doors or can you just paint that too?......also how much was a new carpet?and if your carpet is in good shape is there a way to dye that so its' black?

dcrusupra 05-15-2006 12:53 AM

I actually found door panels with vinyl inserts on them instead of the cloth. And I just spray painted those. The carpet was about $264. I think they do have a dye for the carpet. Not sure how well it works tho.

Update - I've found the seats I want. Its final. Recaro Speed. All black with the red Recaro logo and red stitching. It's well worth the money.

Levi1717 05-15-2006 01:12 AM

thanks.....damn that carpet is expensive..considering i'm in school and can't work alot.

dcrusupra 05-15-2006 03:37 AM

Yea, but it was nice. It came with the hatch carpet also. On Thursday, Im going to put the rest of the interior back in and take some more pictures. I work too much. I hardly have time to work on the car. My schedule is work, Mon-Sat 8-5:30 and school on Mon and Wed nights. And baseball on Tues nights. Im a busy man. Lol.

dcrusupra 05-25-2006 03:21 AM

Ok. So I drove a new C6 corvette today. All you have to do to start the car is have the alarm remote in ur pocket and press the button. And I like that. SO! Ive decided to completely get rid of the key and have the keypad starter kill and a push button start where my cig lighter is. So all i need to do is put in the code and hit the button. When I get the keypad starter kill installed next week I'll ask the guy if this is possible to do. It sounds like it is, and im hoping it is. But we'll see.

damdog05 05-26-2006 10:20 PM

i got a new carpet for about $145 but it doesnt have the hatch carpet. and it only took about 4 days to get it.

dcrusupra 05-27-2006 11:31 PM

Ok. I've decided to rewrap my stock seats with black vinyl and red stitching. My brother hooked me up with someone "that will rewrap my interior for a good price." Not sure how good. I'll talk to him soon and let you all know. I am waiting for money to get into my paypal so I can get a shift boot and e-brake boot in black vinyl with red stitching. Someone on another forum is making them. I havent had much time to do anything. Im looking for a way to redo the bottom carpet part of the door panel where the pocket is. I sprayed a part of it with the interior spray and it came out somewhat good. But not what I'm looking for. I also spray painted the extra damaged fender with the spray paint and it came out a lot better than the rest of the paint on my car. Lol. O well. I'll have some more pics up soon.

I still dont have the damned alarm keypads I ordered last Monday. I called on Tues and they said they shipped it out already. And then I called again on Fri to get the tracking number and they said they already shipped it out that morning. And I still dont have a tracking number. On top of that, I had to call a California number in order to check the status of an order and they left me on hold for about 10 mins. So that was nice of them.

dcrusupra 05-31-2006 05:03 AM

Woohoo, got the shift and e-brake boots and the keypad starter kills today. The keypads are much smaller than i thought they would be. But thats not such a bad thing. Getting one installed in my DD probably Fri. I still need to call my brother to get the number to the guy who will rewrap my front and back seats. I'll call him later on when im at work. Ill let you all know by later on tonight.

burton51m 06-01-2006 04:49 PM

do you know which LED light on superbrightleds.com is the one in the glovebox and which one is by the under your feet on the drivers side...or are they the same LED?

thanks

dcrusupra 06-03-2006 04:42 AM

Im pretty sure they are both 74. Same with the keyring.

dcrusupra 06-10-2006 04:58 AM

Ok. I'm new to body work. But I took off my wing and wiper. Which are for sale for 50 for the wing and 30 for the wiper and motor. I think it looks a lot better. Smoother IMO. I bought some fiberglass and bondo. Im going to lay down the fiberglass first and then the bondo. We'll see how it comes out the first time.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...2_102_full.jpg

dcrusupra 08-16-2006 11:02 PM

Well, I got a FPR from Titan Motorsports.

Ooo, shiny
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/6...wparts1ts0.jpg

and brand new JDM Tyte door hinges that were $114.
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/8...wparts2bw7.jpg

I just ordered a LIPP high flow fuel rail and it should be here on Friday. I decided to go with the fuel system first, to give me some motivation. And these were the cheapest upgrades im doing.

After that I want to start buying the body kit. Which is the Shine Auto Greddy Gracer replica, Bomex sideskirts, Bomex rear undercovers, 89+ tails, and the hatch sunshade.

dcrusupra 08-31-2006 03:58 AM

Well, I decided to use my day off from work and school, (thank you to the very weak storm, Ernesto) to go work on my car. I was trying to find out exactly what happened to the motor and why it blew. Up until today I was having trouble getting the head off. I feel like an idiot now because I forgot to disconnect the hardlines on the fuel rail. After that it came right off.

I found this in one of the cylinders. An exhaust valve head snapped off.
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/4871/1002138oh3.jpg

I also bought the LIPP High Flow Fuel Rail last week.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/8964/1002133tt9.jpg

And one last pic, this is when I got mad and took off my door. New type of lambo door, lol.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/2236/1002135gb8.jpg

Isphius 08-31-2006 03:09 PM

Very nive work so far. If you find a guy who can redo seats, I need mine recovered too. I want to get celica GTS seats though. I think they are a lot more comfortable and more of a "bucket" than the supra seats. Im getting mine done in leather and cow. lol. The whole interior is also going to be black and silver accents. And purple gauge backlights with red needles. Same with all the interior lights. Purple FTW! noone has purple gauges or interior lights.

dcrusupra 09-08-2006 03:25 AM

Upon closer inspection, I found more damage. The piston cracked just above the ring.
http://img436.imageshack.us/img436/4...ture087zx7.jpg
http://img436.imageshack.us/img436/3...ture088oa9.jpg

These are my new toys.
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/9...ture089ze1.jpg

More damage!
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/5...ture091wa7.jpg Notice a valve head missing? Lol.

Spent from 7-9:30 pretty much preparing to pull the engine. I assembled the engine hoist, tried to drain the tranny (no fluid in it whatsoever), unhooked the power steering line, unhooked the a/c lines, and took off the driveshaft (which is for sale). I drank a half gallon of water and my friend drank a 2L bottle of Sprite. Thats what happens when you work in a warehouse with no A/C in Florida.

SupraSaver87 09-08-2006 03:28 PM

Gotta Keep hydrated....lol. I like that side note! That is all....$0.02 now inputted!

dcrusupra 09-20-2006 11:53 PM

And its out....Thank god
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/8...0061836ux8.jpg:redx:

Im tired after all that. It was relatively easy after everything was disconnected. I had problems with the fan clutch and the A/C compressor. They were hitting the upper tie rod so I had to push them back as much as I would with a stick. The motor and transmission are heavy as hells.

Isphius 09-21-2006 12:11 AM

Haha, yes they are mucho heavy. 7m-ge and 5 speed is heavier than my monte carlos 305 with aluminum heads on it and 200-4r trans. The reason is the straight 6 block has to have more material on it by design. On a v8, the oil pan and intake manifold ,which are aluminum and sheet metal, make up a lot of the surface area that the straight 6 has to cover. Plus its longer and taller and about the same width, Both motors being completley disassembled.

Isphius 09-21-2006 12:12 AM

Oh and btw nice work so far haha. GL with your build.

What bulbs are the ones in the glove box, foot rest, cig lighter and ashtray lights? change those to red too! Im trying to track down all the bulbs in purple lol.

dcrusupra 09-22-2006 11:27 PM

Thanks for the comments. Yea, the engine was unbearably heavy with the trans still mated to it. The lights should be the 74. It's the smaller ones. I'm pretty sure that u tracked down all the lights, lol. Besides the dome lights. I'll end up doing those in red too, eventually. I still need to get this friggin engine. Lol.

Isphius 09-27-2006 01:36 PM

Cool. Does the guage backing material have a color or it just relies on the bulbs for its green? I would love to have uv purple gauge back light lol. Ive seen orange, red, blue, green, white, everything but purple. lol

Thats why that "taller, longer mucho heavy" 7M-GE is so smooth. :)
On another note. If you haven't already shaved and finished your rear wiper you'll need to weld up the old hole. If you try to just fiberglass it you will find with time that it will shrink and leave you with a nasty cracked decklid. 35 years in the body business...I know what I'm talking about. I made a few mistakes over those years lol.

Isphius 10-30-2006 06:32 AM

I welded a patch over mine and just bondoed it. It came out ok. And, they could have at least made the block out of aluminum or something. Thats so much weight for just a 3 liter engine.

dcrusupra 12-22-2006 12:40 AM

Umm, update....

New car. 88 N/A Targa.
Bought it for $500 plus $80 to get it towed. It has a blown headgasket. So the engine will come out sometime soon. It also needs a new dashboard. So if anyone has a grey one for sale, I will be looking for one soon. After I buy one of Weez's wings for the targa.
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6...ture092fo6.jpg

Isphius 12-25-2006 03:38 AM

I think thats my old car. lol. Maybe the guy drove it to florida and blew the headgasket. Mine def needed a new dash and a new HG lol. But nah jk it couldnt be y old supra, no targa top.
