Don't worry yet. It's not necessary to replace engine. Probably, change of piston rings will help. If the cylinder is bad, you'll need to bore engine block and replace pistons+rings on o/s 0,5mm

That's right with head. It's the weakest place in 7M engine.
Don't forget to buy new head bolts, it's very important.
And if I was in your shoes, I'd inspected cylinder block, and changed piston...

White smoke...it may be burning oil form turbo/engine or coolant from head gasket. Try to remeber, was it smoke, or it looked more like steam?
Sounds are bad, it may be con rod bearings ...I guess,...

87' car will need to make handmade engine mounts...

The first thing you shuld do - is to run self-diagnostic systems and read errors on ECU. It's very simple to do. TRSM will help you.
It may be ISCV, MAF, TPS, throttle itself, holes in intake or...

I think, first of all, you shold run self-diagnostic system, by connecting Te1 and E1 pins in Diagnostic box.
It may be MAF, ISCV, water temp sensor, holes in intake pipes and so on...
