Fuel injectors

My mom took her cavalier to a mechanic yesterday and it managed to come back with more problems than it left with. The mechanic claims that one of the fuel injectors split in half (she's able to run the car but it sounds really bad right now, and she can't go without the car) so after hearing this, I decided to do the job myself and check for the problem when she gets home from work later today.

The odd thing about this was that the mechanic was supposed to be fixing the a/c.... so how did the fuel system get touched? Other than that the belts needed to be replaced (they could be making the noise I guess) and one of the pulleys is supposedly making a noise.

So now for some questions...

1) To remove fuel injectors... you relieve the fuel pressure by turning a nob/valve on the fuel rail, then remove the fuel rail, then the injectors? Is that correct?

2) Anyone think that the mechanic is at fault here?
