its a bummer because so far the expenses to fix it up are high
- about $1000 or so for the power steering
- and about $ 1500 for the labor to rip apart the engine and fix the water pump line


its almost cheaper to just buy a new engine and drop it in and install a new powersteering pump and rack while the engine is out.

i dont know where you from. but where i from it cost $1,200-$2,000. in 209 area in Cali. they fix your head for you and also replace the water pump n the radiator. everything what i said is all under $2,000. from where i live. so where you from. corewitz....

basically look at $1000.. for head & block work, new gasket, new bolts, water pump, radiator cap, thermostat etc etc

not too sure on the labour side tho

and $1000 for steering
wtf... theres something wrong there... what's wrong with your powersteering?

oh and waterpump line????
there isn't a water pump line as such... just the water galleries in the block & head

it seems your "mechanic" is talking about the water lines going "around" the block and feeding the heater core etc
unfortunately that is a pain to get to for repairs.. but you need to find out if that has a small hole from rusting out or if its just the gasket

do you know if it's leaking on the back of the thermostat housing or what?
can you possibly tell me exactly what location it is leaking?

did your car overheat? how badly?

Here is what it cost me last month for a head gasket and valve job on my N/A, here in Calif Mojave Desert. Turbo model will probably be higher.
I did the R & R work myself. I don't push the car hard very often so I just went with stock gaskets and machine work.

I have a friend at the local Toyota parts dept. that gets me good prices, but the gasket set was going to be $260 (list $415), and $230 (list $350) from friend at favorite parts house. So I hunted around online and found an Ishino (OEM Stock) set for $154 (free shipping). I read an article that said Ishino is one of the largest gasket suppliers to Toyota, so I figured it would be a good one.

Machine shop work with a minimal cut to true up the surface, $425 (They adjusted the valves and put new valve guide seals in, too.)

Toyota factory headbolts, $36 (list $46).. (may be better to use ARP bolts.)

ALL new hoses, belts, thermostat, antifreeze, rad cap, clamps, $125

The center (#3) cylinder head gasket that covers the spark plug holes was $34, (list $44, Toyota Dealer Only).
So..about $650 in parts.
Labor and parts thru a reputable repair shop here would have been $1200-$1600.

I Hope this info gives you enough to get you going in ONE FUN CAR to DRIVE.....

yeah i blew the powersteering pump and rack and theres no power assistance at all. Im from Nebraska and we took it to a place called "2 guys and a shop", who are mechanics that used to work for the toyota dealership.
when we drove it out we started noticing a little white smoke from the engine and it was overheating a little, but right when we noticed it we took it home so we were only got about 10 minutes.we took it home and popped the hood and saw that smoke was coming out between the engine and the radiator so it looked like we blew the water pump, and shortly after we brought it home we saw a puddle of anti freeze. But they say its a water pump line that sounds like what your talking about.. cause its hard to get to and it will take lots of labor to reach and fix. They havent actually ripped it apart and looked at it but thats what there saying happened. the leak was dripping right by the water pump maby within 6 inches to a foot around it. and was hard to see where it was coming from, and we only looked at it for about 15 minutes before we shut it off because we were confident it was from the water pump.

Did you see the post above you're last one? Hope the cost breakdown was infomative. Water pumps are cheap, but that pipe under the exhaust manifold is a bit of work. But hey, if your handy with tools, it may be something to tackle.

i went to the shop and talked to the guys and found out that it was the water pump line that goes around the block and theres a spot rusted out on it. and i was wondering if i simply just dropped a new engine in it if it would replace the problem?
