You should try a new cap. The way the system works is that when the pressure gets too much it overflows and as the system cools down it creates a vacuum and draws coolant back in from the overflow tank and re-fills the radiator and gets rid of any air left providing there is enough coolant in the overflow.
If its going out and not coming back than I would try the cap first and possibly a new thermostat to go with that.
