just to be safe check the valve cover seals. i blew those racing on my n/a a few years ago. i had oil in my spark plugs but mine ended up only running on 3 cylnders because of it. so i would just check those before the head gasket and hope for the best.

Never do 'just' a headgasket. Take the head to a machine shop and have a valve job, pressure test, and milling done.
Check the block surface REALLY carefully.
