If you gunna drift do what he said and upgrade the turbo..i plan on drifting my 89 7mgte..after a motor swap...the upgrade turbo will give u the added power u will need to slid...and if hes charging u 475 for the upgrade just look at www.autobacsusa.com...there pricey but all there parts are from japan or check out hksusa.com or greddy they have good turbos and can provide u with other parts..so just take the extra step and extra money and go upgrade to get more boost and more power

You dont need an upgraded turbo to drift...Of course it does make it easier with the extra power. Its all technique really. I can slide any RWD car stock. It just depends on how you drive it and what techniques you use...ie Feint, power slide, power over, E-brake, braking techniques. Also it would be a good idea to get a 2way LSD. Although the stock LSDs will be ok for now, but again, it makes for easier drifting...and try not to do it in the streets! Good luck

Yes, You wont need 18psi for drifting. And yes just get him to rebuild it to stock trim. Or just get an upgraded compressor if anything. The mk3 wouldnt be my first pick for drifting, These cars were designed to stay in comtrol, It can be done as in any car, But they dont really have the slideability or steering lock that the smaller cars do, Like the ae86 corolla or 240 sx. But to answer your other question, It wont hurt the turbo to restrict the boost, Its actually easier on the turbo. Just get an electronic boost controller and set it as low as you want.
