We need help!!

MY brother and I recently bought a 87 7mgte with manual. It had a bad motor, we pulled it and had all the machine work done, standard bore, the crank went 10 over (.025mm). The head was completly rebuilt, not new valves, just a valve job and so on. Our major problem is that we do not know very much about turbos, you give us a small block chevy and will kill anyone. So, back on subject, we found someone out in Cali, that can rebuild the turbo, it doesnt spin very freely, he said $475 and its all upgraded with garret internals. It should push about 18 psi. We really dont want to upgrade the fuel or anything quite yet. Will it hurt the turbo if we restrict it like that. What all do we have to do to get full boost eventually. And should we just have him rebuild the turbo to stock. He can do that for about $350. We have already bought a few parts for the build. New alum. radiator, down pipe, and we are still looking for electric fan/fans. We just started to put the bottom end together last night. We are using the same pistons and rods. New bearings and rings of course. Right now we just want to get it runing. Our future plans is a drifting car. So, my main question is does anyone know what all we should do about the turbo? Stock, or upgrade? If so, what all do we need to get, and possibly some website for the parts, thanks alot for all the help. I will get some pictures on here very soon.

If you gunna drift do what he said and upgrade the turbo..i plan on drifting my 89 7mgte..after a motor swap...the upgrade turbo will give u the added power u will need to slid...and if hes charging u 475 for the upgrade just look at www.autobacsusa.com...there pricey but all there parts are from japan or check out hksusa.com or greddy they have good turbos and can provide u with other parts..so just take the extra step and extra money and go upgrade to get more boost and more power

You dont need an upgraded turbo to drift...Of course it does make it easier with the extra power. Its all technique really. I can slide any RWD car stock. It just depends on how you drive it and what techniques you use...ie Feint, power slide, power over, E-brake, braking techniques. Also it would be a good idea to get a 2way LSD. Although the stock LSDs will be ok for now, but again, it makes for easier drifting...and try not to do it in the streets! Good luck

Yes, You wont need 18psi for drifting. And yes just get him to rebuild it to stock trim. Or just get an upgraded compressor if anything. The mk3 wouldnt be my first pick for drifting, These cars were designed to stay in comtrol, It can be done as in any car, But they dont really have the slideability or steering lock that the smaller cars do, Like the ae86 corolla or 240 sx. But to answer your other question, It wont hurt the turbo to restrict the boost, Its actually easier on the turbo. Just get an electronic boost controller and set it as low as you want.
