Default Carbed 7m?

I was just wondering...has anyone ever tried a carb set up on a toyota FI 6 cyl, Like the 7m ge motor? It is a big upgrade on the 80s fuel injected porsches and things like that, In both power and throttle response. The only real hard part i can see is making the distributor advane, Youd would need a controller for it because its electronic. Unless an older 6cyl distributor will fit. Id also raise the compression a little bit, to like 10:1, And i think you vould easily make 250-260hp out of the 7mge this way. And then id like to put all of this in a mk2 supra or an old celica, like a 76. Itd be cool as hell haha.

I personally always thought the 7mge would be a strong engine with three 2 barrell side drafts. 3 pairs of 45 DCOE's, but I think you would have to make your own manifold. Much better than the 2 SU's on the old 240Z's. Oh well...........

For an NA motor, The supras FI isnt really all that good for making power, Because of the small throttle body and things like that. Plus its complicated to tune and get running right with other engine mods. Carbs adjust themselves for the most part, By dumping in fuel for a given ammount of air. And most people just want FI because they dont know how to tune carbs and for the fuel economy. A porsche flat 6 converted to carbs from the early FI picks up a lot of torque, some hps, And a lot of throttle response. Im sure you could modify the fuel injection to do the same, But just bolting on some mikuni or webber carbs would be a lot easier. Plus...it would just be cool. haha. Thats my reason for anythin.

They do put out more fuel, but EFI's produce more balance of air and fuel, which is what u want. I would be interested to see what a carbed 7m would be like...

FI is a compromise. Good, smooth reliable running, great cold starts and is getting better all the time, but it is not the system to use if you want power. Sure, if you can upgrade everything to much bigger or force the air in somehow it will perform well, but not great. The intake is small and is built that way for a reason, but not to race. If everyone was happy with there stuff, there would be no reason for this forum almost, except for the problem solving.

It seems like if you want all out power, or barely streetable for the N/A a carb is the best way to go and like I said 3, 2 barrell Webers are the way to go. I used to race a Toyota Celica and went from the stock carb to a 350 then 500 Holley to a dual set of Dellortos. There was no camparison. The twin carbs were more adjustable to each cylinder and never changed once set. Wide open throttle was awesome sounding. Run alcohol with it, which by the way is no problem, except using almost %50 more fuel, but cheaper, very strong!

Cams, bigger valves, a bunch more compression, good headers and collector and of course the sidedraft carbs and I bet you get well over 300 hp that pulls from idle all the way up, no waiting for turbo to spin up. Put a shot of nitrous................ I wish I had the money for all of that. No real way to pass the smog test with that setup, but I would love to drive it.

I had a 69 XKE Jag with twin 1 1/2" strombergs, good torque but.......... I found a guy that had three, 2" SU's and wanted to trade! Sure!!! The difference was like night and day. Hard to beat a variable venturi carburetor. Carbs aren't for everyone and they are getting harder and harder to get parts for, but tuning them are so much easier and more fun.......well to me anyway.

That does sound cool... I hope to build something like that. The 7m is a good flowing motor already and it already makes 200 hp out of 3 liters, so its something good to start with. And just because carbs are basically the analog fuel control version for motors, For everyone....Think of it this way. You can get a 40$ digital watch. Its easy to use, doesnt break, any of that. Then get an analog rolex. Isnt it a lot better? lol.
