Spongy to one guy might be 'slightly firm' to another guy. Yes, you can squeeze the hose (even a new one) with your thumb and fingers to make it closed, to touch both sides together. Spongy to me means soft and squishy, like old hose that's had oil on it, and ruined it.
Have a friend thats worked on cars look at it. You don't want to loose an engine because a hose blew. The hoses behind the head probably need changing.

just got my starting problem fixed, mechanic said that the ignition wires adn the alarm wires were crossed. getting the speedodometer fixed tomorrow along with the belts and hoses. then comes the race against the civic, integra and rx7.
