Haven't personally gotten into the vent controls on my '87, yet. My center, right vent doesn't flow air but the left does so I need to dig in there.

Sounds like you just have a stuck door. Looked like it was possible to access a good amount of the controls from either side of the center console. Try checking those access panels first. All I've seen by coming in through the center console are the electronics. I'll be doing that too since my low fan setting stopped working, need to check the switch.
