Actually it doesn't. With the AFM disconnected the ECU merely reverts to a default base map, but it's not the same as "safe mode" aka "limp mode". The base map is tuned for the assumption of operation at sealevel (100kPa) and an ambient air temp of 70?F. It's the same map you run when the engine is cold minus the subtle tweaks for air flow correction. You should run around the low 14's when up to normal operating temps, IIRC. Given the absence of any real airflow data you may run rich if you're at a higher altitude or the air temp is higher.

"Safe mode" or "Limp mode" isn't set very easily and when it's active it's completely unmistakable... the car will run like CRAP (and barely that well). Unplug a knock sensor and go for a spin... it's awful.

Well right now i try not to run the car at all cause the times that i do run it the car bucks like a bronco and i cant give it to much gas cause it will bog on me. If i slowly ease in to the gas pedal and don't go over 3000rpms the car will run up to 60 miles an hr or more but as soon as i give it to much gas it bogs down on me. Thats with the afm disconnected now with the afm connected i have to keep my foot on the gas to keep the car runing and when i take off the bucks no matter what. It wants to shut off everytime i have the afm connected but when i disconnect it the car will stay runing but very rich you can see the black smoke but again once i connect the afm the smoke goes away but the car will stall. Oh and since i wanted to make sure it was the afm i connected and tape it while the car was runing and right when the car was about to turn off i tape it and the car came back to life as soon as i stop hitting the afm the car stalls out.

By tape, do you mean tap? If you are tapping the afm and it is affecting the way the car runs, it's bad. Plain and simple. You can buy used ones off ebay or at the junk yard, Lexus 1UZ V8's use the same sensor (not the same housing). You may want to consider replacing it with a maf translator and a GM maf sensor. You can probably buy both new for less than a new KVAFM.
