Default Washer Spacers underneath valve lifters

Ok so I have 14 washer spacer looking things underneath the valve lifters. When I flipped the head over the lifters fell off so now I have to redo the clearances and make sure they're within spec, but what throws me off is that some of the lifters didn't have the spacer thing while some did. Am I missing any? Or are these meant to just provide extra spacing for some of the lifters? I haven't done any measurements yet until I can get a definite answer.

If I had 12 of these I could understand that they'd be on the intake side to raise the clearance, but because I have 14 that confuses me. I don't believe I'm missing any.

Anyone with an idea would be greatly appreciated because I see no mention in the TSRM and Haynes manual.

They're the headbolt washers.

The only possibility that I can think of (if they did it on purpose) is that the person responsible was TRYING to shim the valve springs (done to increase spring tension, a bad idea for another thread) but did it on the wrong side of the assembly. I suppose they may have been trying to avoid buying the right size shims, but it's pretty evident that this would be WAY too thick. Did you happen to inspect you clearances prior to removing them?

Remove them and inspect all of the keepers for signs of damage from contact with the washers. Then measure and re-shim ALL of them... if they didn't have any clearance they've been eating up the cam lobes. Inspect the cam lobes for irregular surfaces too.

Thanks that cleared up a whole shit load of confusion. I'm assuming the guy who took the head apart put them there to not lose any of the washers... weird.

Anyhow I tried measuring them with the washers inside and was freakin out because there's no clearance whatsoever. However now that the washers out I now have clearance.

I've just measured the exhaust side and they're clearly too tight on some.

Also on a side note the exhaust cam is the one with the grooved teeth correct?

Ok I'm able to measure all my clearance. I've got all my exhaust, however when I try to measure my intake. about more than half seem to have no clearance what so ever. Please let me know if the exhaust seem to be in spec

Yes, the worm gear drive for the distributor.
