I cannot personally recommend any shops as I do my own repairs, however illinois is loaded with speed and repair shops just find one near you and research the crap out of them, call them, ask them, ask others about them. Beware that if the mechanic or machinist doesn't know what they are doing or is careless about researching the correct specs and following procedures it can cause countless headaches and heartbreaks not too far down the road.
This goes for the oil change places too. What weight oil did you use? How much? The 89 7mgte oil dipstick ckufin sucks. You should perform a few diagnostic checks first before deeming the head gasket bad (or the only thing bad). There is a few reasons for an engine to "tick" and/or blow smoke, none of which are good. Start by having the coolant tested for hydrocarbons, that would be the cheapest and easiest way to identify a bad head gasket. A compression and leak down test may confirm that and uncover other problems that would need addressing as well. If it passes those tests, consider the condition of the turbo. These are things you can check before bringing it to a shop. Mechanics aren't cheap so it pays to be informed, good luck. |

Sounds like maybe a valve tick, could be wrong but its the only thing I have personally experienced with a ticking, aside from exhaust leak. Do a wet/dry compression test on it, that won't tell you exactly whats wrong but it will atleast let you know if your cylinders are keeping compression. On compression test you're looking for 145-150 compression but you really want them to all be 150.
