Yes, it would and no you wouldn't... it'd be big enough that if you knew the difference you'd hear it, but you wouldn't necessarily see anything as the leak wouldn't be losing a large volume of gasses until a high load.

haha so um... how to put this...

my turbo blew... i think. well i go too accelerate, and there is a terrible whining sound coming from somewhere around the turbo. really loud and it just gets under your skin. it will boost though if you tough through the wining and when it does boost the noise goes away so someone should confirm that it is in fact a blow turbo.

oh and what kinda shaft play should i look for?

Well, a death whine sounds different than a boost leak which sounds different than an exhaust leak... still could be any of the above.

When you check the turbo there really shouldn't be much movement in any direction. If there's more than 1 to 1.5mm it's in need of a rebuild, more than 2 to 2.5 and it could be whining and possibly beyond rebuilding. Check if the impeller is making contact with the compressor housing in any spot... if it is check for missing material, don't want shavings making it past the IC and into the engine.

alright great. i really dont know how much movement there is, but its probably about 1mm to 1.5mm and the turbine isnt touching the housing anywhere, so would you suggest a rebuild?

thanks again
