the cam gear basically advances or retards the timing on the cam ( opens the inlet valves earlier or later in the engine cycle ) this inturn will give you power lower or higer in the rev range, depending if you move it to the plus or minus side on the gear. zero is standard timing. it can be a simple way to gain power, but there are trade offs. I had mine done when i first put the 7mgte in my mk2. BUT i have a microtech EMS witch was tuned on a dyno via a laptop. it let the engine rev out more giving me about 274whp , great on open roads but annoying in traffic. At low rpm in traffic it was not as smooth. It tended to surge a bit while holding accelerator steady. No problem on the gas ,or of it ! But i was always in traffic going to and from work so it got annoying . So next time i had it serviced i had them set it back to fairly standard timing, witch dropped my power to 234whp. still running 15 pd boost with both tunes. but made it alot smoother at low steady revs .

so turning towards a positive range will advance my timing allowing more power in higher rpm's but not allowing a smooth engine timing in lower steadier rpm's? I'm assuming turning it towards the negative range will retard my timing allowing more power in lower rpm's to allow quicker acceleration but losing out on top speed?

it's the other way, advance for low end and retard for top end. retarding it lets it rev higher than you normally would be able to, you can tell the differance quite easy once you drive it , i loved holding it at about 3000 rpm in third and then bury my foot . My diff is a 4.1 so it really would launch hard and the extra revs meant i didn't have to shift as early. IT WAS FUN!!!!

EMS = engine management system, the little computer or box that controls the injectors and look's after firing the plugs, you air fuel mixture ,all that sort of crap. you know the shit that makes it go! LOL
i'm not sure if the mapping needs to be altered that's all maybe you should ask your mechanic. Im only a dumbass engineer!!! lol
i can machine an engine ,assemble an engine, but i'm the last prick you want to tune your engine!!!! LOL

ok gteduck let me see if i got this correct....tuning the cam to a positive range will retard my timing allowing my engine to achieve higher rpm thus producing more hp in higher gears but the trade off is not having smooth timing on low steady rpm and tuning my cams to the negative range will my advance my timing allowing for quicker acceleration in lower gears but losing out on top speed and power in higher gears...is my knowledge on this correct?

lol if there was thing i want to do to my supra is definatly rebuild the engine give that baby a new heart a modified heart that is lol

LOL !!! advance/plus/low revs
retard/minus/higher revs ( i'm pretty sure )
it makes no difference what gear your in, the engine still behaves the same way.i don't know about you but when i give it shit the revs never drop below 3000 to 3500. HEY you only get lag once at worst, if you stay on the pedal a keep the snail winding there is no such thing .lol

There a lot more to it than just advancing and retarding to shift the output peaks... Cam tuning has little to do with the EMS employed, you'll get more out of it that way, but there's no problem with tuning your cam timing on the stock EMS.
