OK, so I took out the CPS, spun the sprocket around one whole turn, until the hole lined up with the groove again, re-installed it and checked timing. I was now able to time it to spec. So timing is not an issue anymore. However I still have that steady repeating pinging that increases with RPM. Only now I'm not sure if it's really coming from my #5 cylinder. It certainly sounds louder and clearer over my #5 cylinder, however I can hear it on any metal suface of the engine, including the turbo. I'm going to re-check my valve clearances next.
