Default HELP: 1989 Supra WONT START!

My 1989 supra won't even turn over.

One day fine, now... nothing.

The car has never sluggishly started before and now it won't even make an attempt to turn over.

INFO:

The dashboard flickered and made a half assed turn signal sound right before the problem occurred. There is a red light by the key that used to flicker red. It is now solid. I have no idea what that is.

Maybe the alarm?

Anyone have any idea?

Default car won't start

Sobo,

have you done the elecrtical trouble shooting yet?? It sounds like you have a basic electrical problem. But no one has any idea what you have done.

You need to be more explicit.

Is that clicking sound coming from the right side kick panel of the interior? If so, then its your starter solenoid, chances are it doesn't need to be replaced. The problem usually lye's with the wires from/to the solenoid and starter. The only thing is you have to pull the dash out and rewire a new wire to do it correctly, but people have bypassed it all together and put a aftermarket solenoid in the engine bay and that wont require any major parts removal.

My car has a similar problem, some days it wont start, others it will start with no problem. I don't like the prospect of cutting the harness and splicing a bypass to the starter so I haven't taken that route. I plan to pull the dash and rewire it.

If its not the solenoid, then its probably the alarm system. Try locking the car up and arming the system. Then unlocking it with the key it may start.

Typically if you have a clicking sound and it wont start then the solenoid wire is the culprit.

Good luck.

On my '88, you need to unlock the passenger side door to disable the alarm. I have a blinking light on the right side of the dash for the alarm. It goes solid when I first lock it up, then blinks slowly after a couple of minutes. If yours remains solid, the alarm circuit may be in trouble, and you may have to by-pass the starter cut-out circuit. Check out his thread if that is the case: http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/...rm-system.html
