You're straight dude.
Sounds like rebuild time. You have rod knock. You basically at this point have 3 choices. Drive it till it dies. Cut your losses. Or go bankrupt rebuilding the thing. Because now you're talking about internals and that's an entire ground up restore. Big Bucks. |

A ground up restoration isn't a huge deal if:
A) the car is NOT your only mode of transportation B) you LOVE surprises (it's amazing how much you can find that's wrong once you get in there)! C) you want a reliable car D) you've studied advanced meditation techniques for half a lifetime in Tibet and are as such only half as likely to quit the project and part out the car OR E) you have a VERY unnatural love for inanimate objects. If you're hoping to make big power down the road you should consider a full rebuild anyway. HOWEVER, a full rebuild isn't necessarily a requirement. You can inspect and replace the required bearings and have the crank polished and get another 100K out of the engine. I'd replace the oil pump while you're in there too. |

D. I find bob marley sometimes helps with a side of jimmy hendrix.
And pink floyd goes a long way as well. E. This is me. Bulls eye. It'll drain your wallet. Your bank account and your wifes bank account. You're going to buy parts knowing she won't speak to you because you could have gone to cancun instead of buying car parts. If this sounds like the road you wish to travel..., Then welcome my friend. |

OKAY IM ON THE BOAT FOR ALL THE ABOVE!!!!!!
I live in missouri and actually found a lady in grain valley which is about 20 min east of where I live and she just had her supra ovehauled cause it spit out coolant from overflow bottle one morning in her parking lot where she worked. She told me she had the car towed to a friend and he installed a jdm engine into it. I found her on craigslist. I called her about her motor and asked every question I could think of. She told me she want ed 200. bucks for the engine so I offered her 100 cash and she took it. So far everything looks good but like CRE said I love surprises. But for 100 dollars I couldnt pass that up at all. So im in the process of tearing it down and ill just pull the other one and use what I need and have fun with the rest. Im game for whatever. Again I just need to find some interior panels. |

Provided you actually have a garage to build an engine in... my wife would kill me if I tried to work on one in the living room. ![]() |

Guys, are you trying to scary me?
Let s take it one step at a time. So, assuming it is rod knock, one should replace the damaged one, but if there would be better changing all of them, right? Woludn t this be sufficient? One should change the HG if gone this far? What else? What else is a MUST, and what would be a good ideea without being a must? I ask this to make a starting list, to know if it is just the rod knocking, and everithing else is ok (a very small possibility) what I would have to buy. The surprises the came along the way... It will be the bonus ![]() Thanks

If you think you have rod knock.
Then you probably do. If you don't, you still have serious issues. Part it out or rebuild it. Entirely. Buy a different engine and rebuild it. There is no minimal fix for what you probably have. UNLESS: You locate the knocking and where it's coming from and verify that it's not rod knock. It could be piston slap...., which "maybe"...., you can get buy with 1 new one but I doubt it. I don't see a 0 mile piston fitting well into a 15 + year old cylinder and having an extended life expectantcy. Without a complete rebuild. You can monkey with the top end and make things happen. But the bottom is the factory. Any issue there is not a good one. |
