Default Differences between 7M-GE and 7M-GTE

I have no idea why, but it seems vBulletin (the forum's software) doesn't like large HTML tables.... so you'll need to scroll down a ways to get to the table. Just keep scrolling... I promise it's there.

Traits & Components 7M-GE 7M-GTE
Induction Naturally Aspirated Turbocharged(stock 6-8psi)
Unique Components ACIS - Acoustic Control Induction System Check valve between surge tank and ISCV.
Air Flow Meter VAFM - Vane Air Flow Meter (deflection meter system) KVAFM - Karmann Vortex Air Flow Meter (optical meter system)
EFI Naturally both systems use different engine, engine bay, dash wiring harnesses and EMS. One knock sensor between cyls 3 & 4 Two knock sensors: First between cyls 1 & 2; Second between cyls 5 & 6
Ignition Single ignition coil w/ distributor Multi-channel igniter, multi-coil (wasted spark*)
CPS located in distributor CPS without distributor.
Gauge cluster differences Battery gauge, different tach circuit Boost gauge, no batter, different tach circuit
Lubrication System Lower volume oil pump same pressure as GTE pump. High volume oil pump same pressure as GE pump.
No oil cooling components. Oil cooler (bypass, pressure regulated)
Additional Cooling Features   Oil squirters to cool pistons
One additional 10" or 12" aux fan between the A/C condensor and
the radiator.
Turbo cooling circuits (oil and water)
Piston dish volume (this accounts solely for the difference in compression between the two engines) 9.5cc 19cc
Cylinder volume 40cc 40cc
OEM head gasket thickness 1.37mm 1.37mm
Compression 9.1:1 (My calculations show this should be a bit higher. Around 9.3.) 8.387:1
Cylinder bore 83mm 83mm
Stroke 91mm 91mm
Minimum Recommended Octane (AKI = R+M/2) 87 AKI or better (91 RON, 95 RON recommended) 91 AKI or better (97 RON)
Transmission W58 (push type pressure plate), A340E R154 (pull type pressure plate), A340E
End Gear 4.30:1 3.91 ('87-'88), 3.73 ('89-'93)
Fuel Pump Intermediate flow High flow
Fuel injectors '86.5-'88 Low impedance: 260-320cc/m
'89-'93 High impedance: 276-340cc/m
(NOT interchangable**! Let the rumor of the later model injectors flowing over 20% more die already!)
'87-'93 Low Impedance: 404-456cc/m

*The GTE ignition setup uses three channels to control spark across all six cylinders. This is accomplished by what is known as "wasted spark". When the igniter is signalled to fire channel #1, for example, it actually sends a spark to cylinder #1 AND cylinder #6. While one cylinder is on its combustion the other is on its exhaust stroke... thus one spark is "wasted". The pairings are: 1 & 6; 3 & 4; @ & 5

**The '89 and later MKIII injectors may be used in earlier models by bypassing the injector pack on the driver's side fender. These injectors are most easily spotted by their green tops where earlier model injectors had yellow tops. The yellow top injectors can NOT be made to function in '89 and newer vehicles.

Well, I'm tired of working on trying to beat this table into submission so I'm calling it a night. I'll go back over the information later to make sure it's all kosher. If there's something else that you think is important to list then please let me know.

Sweet table Cre, lots of good info here. I did notice one thing that I believe should be changed; the auto transmissions you have listed as A134E's, but aren't they A340E's?

Just seen this table . . . very useful

Just one thing, I don't know about other markets, but here in the UK the 7M-GE DOES have an Oil Cooler, the same as on the 7M-GTE cars.
