You don't need any external system to check the codes on either of the type of ECU which the MKII came with. I believe that the '85 has the TCCS system in which case diagnosis is the same as it is for the MKIII. Refer to the MKIII FAQ section for a thread on checking diagnostic/error codes.

What year did they switch the diagnostics system? Was it just certain models after a certain year or jus '86 models? The had the round harness connector for most of it, i know, but I was certain it changed to the TCCS system toward the end.

82 has the vacuum advanced dist. and it goes electronic in 83 and im sure its the same though 84.
in 85 we got a different style tps, and egr system, a factory alarm and a knock sensor. carries through 1986.

the 9pin & 13pin is a Pre-TCCS ecu (82')
the 10pin, 18pin & 24pin is a TCCS ecu (83'-86')

canadianbakinsupra that manual would be helpful but on my mkII my check engine light doesnt stay on. It only blinks a bit when engine is on and I have it in park, when I give it some gas and its in low rpm the check engine light blinks a bit then engine chokes and car dies.

like cre said in the second post. you can manually check error codes on both ecu's. try searching around and see what comes up for the 82 style ecu.

i would really check www.celicasupra.com search everything. once agian, you can test your AIR FLOW METER. your car has NO "maf"
refer to your repair manual for testing.
