Question

seems like you know a good deal about supras from some of the posts youv down. im looking at a 89 supra turbo. its a kid that owns it got it from his dad. interior and interior are in good condition. but the kid says the timing is off but dosnt know what is realy wrong. so want to sell it. hasnt given me a price yet and i think i can get a realy low one. personaly i think its the turbo going out. cause this year i have heard the turbo gos out alot. havnt seen the engine yet so not shure. plus timing is alot like the turbo going out. can you give advice what to look for in the engine too know whats wrong. and what kind of price i should ask on this year and these problems.
thanks

I always recommend that its worth spending $50 to have a shop look a car over before spending the $$$.

I ask this question sometimes to the 'fools' (no dissing intended to you) that come into my shop AFTER they bought a used car....

"What made you think you were qualified to buy a used car" ???

I tell all my customer to bring it by BEFORE they buy it.

Even the seemingly intelligent ones go right out and buy first. I have NO PITTY anymore. I just fix them up and take their $$. (They paid for my new Mercedes).

My point is....I have been a 'Master Mechanic for 30 years, and owned 60 cars, and sold at dealerships for 3 years.

People buy used cars with NO knowledge of cars, and then cry when they find out they bought a piece of crap that's gonna take $1-2k to get in decent shape.

Hi,

i'm new to this forum, well forums in general.
i've just bought another 1991 supra and paid ?600 (around $1200 in your money) over here in scotland. have no idea what it would be worth over by you but hey might be useful info for you.

As for the engine trouble if its only 50 bucks to get it checked out i would go for that, over here a garage will rape you to look over a car!!.

is it a non-starter? or rough idle/miss firering could be one of a list of problems, if you could give me more info might be able to help with possible problems.

Default 1987 supra

Hello I just Bought a 1987 Supra BLue Love it nice shape too I bought the car used (of Course) and drove it 60 miles at first it was sputtering and had no power but once i ran it for a 20 miles i stoped and put some Fuel injector cleaner and it started to to stop sputtering a little and had more power Im a noob to the supra and am glad to be a part of the family but any suggestions to this sputtering problem would be awesome im going to give it a complete oil change and tune up and hope that helps maybe change the fuel filter.

Thankyou Supra with out you there is no meaning

I have a blue 1987 supra as well and when it started sputtering it was a blown headgasket, it could be a small thing like a clogged fuel filter. I highly reccomend you get it diagnosed at a local shop! Also check your oil for any foamy look to it, thats a big sign of a BHG. I would just seriously get that car checked out.

if it's lacking power it's either a blown head gasket (BHG) or else check all your lines it could be a split hose and the turbo is not making it's proper boost.
