Default Failed Emissions

Hi all,

So I just failed emissions and was wondering what might be up. The exhaust smells like the engine is running really rich. Apart from the air-flow sensor, what else might cause it to run so rich? Are the air-flow sensors repairable or just replacable?

Failed Readings:

[25/25]
HC: 143/140
NO: 1312/984

[50/15]
NO: 1427/1077

Thanks for the info.

Where is the CO (carbon monoxide) reading? You have HC and 2 NO readings.

What is this 25/25 and 50/15?

I can tell you one thing though, you are going to have to pull the EGR valve off and clean out the passages in the EGR valve AND the intake manifold AND the cylinder head, not an easy job with the head still bolted to the block. Trust me, your EGR valve is definately coated in carbon with NOx readings that high.

Have you replaced the spark plugs and wires yet? Air filter? Fuel filter? Have you checked ignition timing? All of these play a vital role in emissions output. Any stored codes? You should check the ECT sensor with an ohm meter. Replacing the O2 sensor won't hurt either.

Aren't you the one with the 200k mile supra? Good luck getting that thing to pass without an overhaul.

I only listed the readings I failed. I passed the others with flying colors.

There are two tests. The numbers are something to do with the accuracy or something.

Have you replaced the spark plugs and wires yet? Yes. Air filter? Yes. Fuel filter? No. Have you checked ignition timing? No. All of these play a vital role in emissions output. Any stored codes? Maybe. You should check the ECT sensor with an ohm meter. Replacing the O2 sensor won't hurt either.

Aren't you the one with the 200k mile supra? Good luck getting that thing to pass without an overhaul. Shit. =]

Well, better get started,
Thanks for all the info,
Meh

So I go to check out my EGR system and find two lines disconnected from it that I'm 90% sure weren't disconnected before I took it for emissions.

Maybe the tester/mechanic pulled 'em to get me to pay to fix it? Who knows.

Anyway -- How badly would having two of the lines pulled affect NO?

Disonnected Lines:
Red dots show pulled lines.

Wink

DUH.

It appears by the picture that the line that actually operates the EGR valve was not hooked up.

Let this poor fellows experience be a lesson to others. Look around under the hood for signs of problems and disconnected items. And make sure it runs like a top before ever going for a smog test.
