You DO NOT want to weld your spider gears in the differential.
If you did (and I have done it before, on 4x4 mud puller trucks), you could NOT drive the car on pavement.

Shimming is for LSD diff. It make it tighter than stock, but not good for a daily driver car. And, a bunch of work that you, or whomever does it, better know what they are doing.
