While that is sound advice for a good running engine with no clearence issues or tired components, I think that when you reach the point in the life of your engine where it is tired and near end-life, that these additives can extend the time until your ready to do a rebuild.
I limped a tired old 20R Celica motor that burned 2 qts of oil per tank of fuel for an additional 2 years and at least 20k miles befoe I sold it. It was still running when I sold it. I dont know if the additives made a difference or not, but it gave me little more confidence at least.
