Question Checking Thermostat

I recently had a new water pump installed, and the mechanic said he thought I didn't have a thermostat because he heard water rushing through as soon as he started it. I did my own test, where I started the car and squeezed the upper radiator hose and did not feel pressure of water flowing through. That would mean there is a thermostat, wouldn't it, as the thermostat opens when the engine heats up. Besides opening the housing, is there a sure fire test to tell if you have a thermostat. Also, everything seems to run normally. The car heats up after driving a little while, but not to fast. I really don't think this is true about not having a thermostat but I would like to find out for sure. I drove this car all winter without problems.

Thanks,

Scruff

the easiest way to tell would just take apart the thermostate. its not hard, wont take alot of time, and if you wanted to you could replace/ put in a thermostate. they are pretty cheap, i think like 5bucks. id put on some sealant to make sure it seals good though. also if you decide to do this, drain the radiator or put something under the car to collect the coolant. i know you probably arent a dumby but im just reminding you...

Okay, sounds good, but if it is there, is there a gasket that I will wind up destroying and need to replace?

There is a rubber seal around the thermostat, other than that there is no other seal or gasket in you way. I replaced my seal but you dont have to if is in good condition.

Just get a new thermostat AND a seal (reusing the old seal always leaked for me). Thermostats are supposed to be replaced every 2-4 years.
And don't over tighten the bolts.

Okay, Mr.Nickleye, I will replace my thermostat. Does it matter where I buy it. Toyota wants $25 for the thermostat and seal. I'm sure Autozone will be much cheaper, but will I be getting my moneys worth? Should I stick with the Toyota Parts or go after market? One more thing, do I need to use a sealer of any type like silicone or something?

Thanks,
