you could get a rebuilt head and gasket for under $600. i dont know what labor costs would be but it sounds like he was gonna rip you off.

With that info...seems like he may have been. But that was 2 different mechanics from 2 different places. So I dunno. Could be a locality thing. Where can I get that head and gasket? I was going to just go ahead with one of the strongest head gaskets I could find, think it's by HKS...a metal head gasket.

well i see both of them on ebay from time to time but anyone will tell you, you never know what you will got over ebay. i bought a cps and when i got it the cap was torqued so much it cracked open.
