There is a way you can do it I used to do it on older cars with V-8s. It works just takes a little time and you dont have to pull the head. First you pull the plug out and turn the cylinder to BDC and then take a rope and stuff a large portion of it down in the cylinder. Then you turn the cylinder up towards TDC till you feel a bit of restriction. Then as someone holds the crank you comress the spring and remove the spring retainers. Then pull the spring and replace the guide seal. Now putting the spring back on is tricky but with a little skill it can be done then you just move to the next cylinder. Like I have said I have done this many times so I wouldnt have to pull the head and it works great but just takes more time.

Yes very slowly turn the crank you dont want to put a bunch of unneeded presure on the piston itself. The nice thing is if it is a softer rope then it will have a bit of give and you wont have to worry about damaging things when you do it. On my 86.5 that is what I did to replce the valve guides and it worked. Added time is the fact of haveing to do one then pull the rope out and move to the next one it more tedious than anything.
