burning oil please help
 

ok so when i drive my car say when i start the car up theres a puff of blue smoke then it goes away then if i let the car idle for a few then when i move it shoots out blue smoke and then it stop and i checked my oil level i think ive burned around 1 quart of oil do you know what it might be maybe valve seals??

Sounds like valve guide seals. You can use 20w50 oil to slow it down some, until you repair the problem.

how much does it cost to fix the valve guid seals if i do it myself cause i got a toyo tech who does work for free

The biggest problem when replacing valve guide seals is figuring out how to hold the valves in place when removing the keeper and spring. If the cylinder head is installed on the engine you will need to use compressed air with the cylinder at TDC that you are working on. Its a very complicated procedure best left to a professional. If you mess up on your calculations when spinning the crank, you will drop a valve into the cylinder and you will be forced to remove the cylinder head. If the cylinder head is off of the car, its much easier and there is no real chance for error.

Go buy a quart of 20w50 and a quart of 5w30. Pour a little out of each one and you decide. Most engine wear occurs right at startup and a few moments after. I'll be running 0w30 this winter.

haha okay so i go to NAPA to get valve stem seals and they turn out to be around 60 bux but then they tell me i cant order them so i call my friend over at toyota to tell me the price on valve stem seals over they as usuall toyota jacks the price 2 times up to 120 so i say hell no then i go to good ol shucks and they can even order them in and my total will only be 43 dollars how cool is that?

There is a way you can do it I used to do it on older cars with V-8s. It works just takes a little time and you dont have to pull the head. First you pull the plug out and turn the cylinder to BDC and then take a rope and stuff a large portion of it down in the cylinder. Then you turn the cylinder up towards TDC till you feel a bit of restriction. Then as someone holds the crank you comress the spring and remove the spring retainers. Then pull the spring and replace the guide seal. Now putting the spring back on is tricky but with a little skill it can be done then you just move to the next cylinder. Like I have said I have done this many times so I wouldnt have to pull the head and it works great but just takes more time.

so how much time do you think it took you in all to do the whole procedure adn to move the piston to top dead center did you just turn the crank???
