oxygen sensor

my engine light came on when i was driving down the highway yesterday. I did a diagnostic check when i came back and got a code 21 (oxygen sensor signal).

It could be the oxygen sensor itself or the wiring, ( Checked all the connections..no loose wires or dry rotting here)I dont know yet.

any way of telling?
any way of cleaning the sensor? Because a new one if really expensive.

mrnickleye 03-20-2007 01:38 AM

No cleaning, only replacing.

They aren't too much $$$.

If wiring seems good, then likely sensor.

Ohm meter testing, or best is 'on the car' with proper scanner.

burton51m 03-20-2007 09:47 PM

i thought the guy said they were $146.** at the dealership when i called?

at least i think he said $146

redmaro 03-20-2007 10:56 PM

I you dont want to spend that much look into Bosch O2 sensors, they are cheaper . You can buy them at Auto Zone or Checkers.

Staceman 03-21-2007 02:28 PM

Don't go with Bosch. You can get NipponDenso o2 sensors at sparkplugs.com far cheaper than the dealer. This is OEM. Also, the "snout" is longer than the Bosch, which gets a better read of the exhaust as it passes through. Check it out.

OmeGa 03-22-2007 02:50 AM

I bought one and found out later I didnt need it. $50+ shipping and its yours.

burton51m 03-23-2007 03:11 AM

i already got one at autozone for 40 thanks anyway

ethan12510 03-25-2007 08:16 PM

Where?

my 89 supra also needs a new o2 sensor. but where exactly is the o2 sensor loacted? Thanks.

redmaro 03-25-2007 08:21 PM

Its located right on the Turby elbow.

ethan12510 03-25-2007 08:24 PM

im sorry but im a bit of a noob. And Dont know what a Turby elbow is. sorry
And thanks in advance for the help!!

redmaro 03-25-2007 08:28 PM

LOL, Its located on your turbo elbow.

redmaro 03-25-2007 08:33 PM

Theres a pic or the turbo and where the Oxygen Sensor is located.http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar.../TC/TC_002.gif

ethan12510 03-25-2007 08:39 PM

Okay i have found the o2 sensor but i cant seem to get it off!! Does any one have any idea on how to losen those two bolts? the Bolts dont want to move at all.

redmaro 03-25-2007 09:02 PM

You found it!!!!

I took off mine with a ratchet and a socket. Maybe you can try and apply some heat to it.

ethan12510 03-26-2007 12:15 AM

Stuck?

Well first off where does it plug into? Second i have broken some sockets trying to get it off!!! Third what size socket did you use and does the new o2 sensor come with bolts? Thanks

IHateHacks 03-26-2007 12:52 AM

It plugs into a yellow connector near the cam sensor.

The 2 nuts holding it on are 12mm.

O2 sensor does not use bolts. There are studs threaded into the O2 sensor housing (turbine elbow) and the O2 is held on by the 2 12mm nuts. And no, a new O2 does not come with any new hardware, just a new gasket.

You better be careful taking those nuts off, if you snap the studs you will be up shits creek without a paddle. In other words, you will need to take the downpipe off and remove the turbine elbow and get a new one or have a shop remove the snapped studs.

Try using a penetrating oil like PB or like he said use heat, a propane torch should do the trick.

ethan12510 03-26-2007 01:11 AM

well i got one nut off but the other one is really stuck, maybe even stripped? What are my options?

IHateHacks 03-26-2007 01:23 AM

There are a couple of options. The one that holds the most hope for you is try finding ANY size socket that "almost" fits on the stripped nut but is just barely too small. Then, hammer that bitch on there as hard as you can until it is jambed on the nut. You will ruin the nut and whatever socket you use, but its the only way you will be able to get the leverage to take it off.

But even that method doesn't work 100% of the time. So use this method at your own risk!

Good luck.

ethan12510 03-26-2007 01:25 AM

okay thanks for that!!! Does any one have a picture of where the o2 sensor connects to becuse i cant seem to find an open connector? Sorry for being such a noob

IHateHacks 03-26-2007 01:32 AM

Dude, just follow the wire until you get to a big round yellow connector. You really can't miss it.

Unless.......Someone replaced the O2 sensor before and used a universal O2 sensor which requires you to splice it into your wiring harness therefore deleting your big round yellow connectors.

I could post a pic but I worked all day on my pos and I'm too tired to go play photographer right now.

ethan12510 03-26-2007 01:35 AM

i dont have a yellow connector in sight? I will post a pic. If i take it to a shop they can get it off right?

IHateHacks 03-26-2007 01:40 AM

Yes, a shop will get it off but they will charge you probably an extra 2 hours of labor to remove it. They will probably just cut it off and replace it with a generic nut.

I'm interested in what your harness looks like.

ethan12510 03-26-2007 02:09 AM

how do you post pics? Or can i email them to you? ALso i have one gray connector but i dont see another gray connector thats open with in the range of the o2 sensors wire. There is a open connector near the part that says 7MGTE on the passengers side? But it dosent reach? I will probly end up takeing it some where. Becuse i just got the car and it needs to be inspected. Will the inspection place, lets say hoffmans jiffylube just take the bolt off and then put a new one on? Will they know were to plug it in, becuse when i first opend my hood it wasnt pluges in to anything? so if some one could post a pic of where tro plug it in that would be great. And thanks for all the help!!!!!

ethan12510 03-28-2007 02:08 AM

help? anybody

ethan12510 03-28-2007 08:57 PM

i guess no one will help me? also what are the side affets of driving without an o2 sensor?

OmeGa 03-29-2007 12:03 AM

Your car may run rich, using too much gas and not enough air.

meaning horrible gase mileage? will running to rich hurt my car? thanks

ddmcse 03-29-2007 12:26 AM

it's better to run rich than to run lean . rich wastes gas and causes a ton of black smoke and soot

lean means not enough gas in the mixture and it will raise the running temp enough to do serious damage

ethan12510 03-29-2007 12:30 AM

so what ur saying that i will not do any damage to my engine if i drive with out an o2 sensor, I will just waste gas? Also could some one post a pic of where there o2 sensor plugs in. (mine came with it unpluged and a little cord with no female connector in reach)

IHateHacks 03-29-2007 01:34 AM

I'm still too lazy to take a picture but I have an old one from like 2 years ago-

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f2...e/DSC00360.jpg

You see that yellow connector on the right? On top of the cam sensor and near the power steering res? That's where your O2 plugs into.

Alright i will :) i just hope i can do it so i dont have to pay a shop to do something so easy

ethan12510 03-29-2007 09:44 PM

well i must have a strange Hook up. Do u guys have a cord between the o2 sensors cord and the female connector? My sensors cord dosent seem to be long enough?

Isphius 04-01-2007 08:07 AM

Its the thing that connects your turbo to your exhaust. The o2 sensor is sticking out and back at like 45 degrees and has a 3 wire plug. The 50$ O2 sensors suck balls. Just invest in the better ones. You want the one that looks like a machine gun barrel on the end with all the holes, not the one that looks like a spiral of some sorts(bosch style)
