Help!!!
 
I have a problem getting the oil filter off. It has been 3 hours and I had many people try it...still not coming off....now it is all chewed up...any suggestions please!!! before I start to freak out

I never re-use filters so I just stab them with a screwdriver and use that as a handle ,though it does get messy since the oil starts running everywhere. Next time you find yourself at a dollar store check their tool section for a strap wrench. Those work pretty well too ,for many things. Just a rubber strap and a handle.

since its al chewed up..now u dont have many options...give the screw driver a try, although there isnt much room in there but what the heck......not many options....by the way..next time ..dont overtighten the filter....since it expands with heat and gets tighter...good luck..

A MAJOR problem Toyota (and perhaps some others, too) had in the '80s and early '90s was filter gaskets sticking to the block.

Many engines were destroyed because the mechanic did not make sure the old gasket was removed. Then he put the new filter OVER the old gasket. The pressure would blow out the old gasket, and the engine had a meltdown when it ran out of oil.

One of the main causes of the gasket sticking was that a coating of new oil was not applyed to the filter gasket before installing it to the engine, so it bonded to the block.

So.....try using a small hammer and a chisel. Place the chisel at an angle on the filter base and hammering it to start the filter turning. I've done this with success several times over the years.

well after about 4 hours finally got it removed...wow!!...thanks for the replys...anyways now that all that is done I noticed that the oil level gage on the dash is staying on "0"..anyone know why?

you probably accidentaly disconnected the oil pressure sending unit plug while you were messing around with the oil filter.......it should be close in that area, its a single wire connector with a rubber boot on it...

I will check that but I did notice that it worked fine for a few starts and then today it did not read again.

Also if you change the oil your self alot I would use the K&N oil filter because it has a fitting on the bottom(almost like a nut welded on the oil filter) so you could just put a scoket and get a wrench and it would come off very easy and it wont be a pita lol.

well the filter troubles are over, I now have to check why the dash gage does not work all the time. I have a few other questions as well.

1, I replaced the rad with a new one and I notice some smoke from the rad now, It is not leaking anywhere, could this be just because it is new?.

2, whenever I start her up she will rev real high around 1700-1800 and only after about 15 mins come to rev normally around 700-800...is there something I would need to adjust? I don't think it is a cold start issue.

1- The somke could be fine. If it is brand new then it might just be burning off some spilled coolant.

2-check your cold start temp switch. It might be bad.

I will check that, thanks....something else, I was filling washer fluid and noticed that it all leaked out, how do I get to the washer resoiver?...I checked the TSRM and could not find it.

ok. I went to check the codes on the car as it is idleing way too high still, I could not get the codes, in the little diagnostis box where I have to jump the terminals, is there supposed to be grease on all the contact points?

ok...I finally managed to check the codes...this is what happened....two blinks and then a pause, this pattern keeps repeating...what does it mean?

hey i went out and looked at mine, it is located directly below where you fill it up at, prob have to access from below, might even have to remove dust cover or w/e they call that thing, hope this helps.

i am also having a cold start idle problem, so keep us posted, mine goes to around 12 or 1300 though.

your thinking its '2', maybe its '22'. water temp sensor signal. no idea what that could mean...use that link the guy above me gave you, then go to the TSRM in that post and browse around.

as long as you know its working, it should be fine...however, gauges == really important, so keep looking around.

yeah and if it is 22 then it could be an open or short circuit in water temp. sensor signal, and that link can tell you a lil more, it's a very useful place.
