I managed to replace the plugs and wires and put everything back together, now I want to replace the timing belt, how difficult is it to do this on a scale from 1-10 keeping in mind i have never done this before?

I would put it at about a 8. Taking everything apart isnt bad, but if you dont line the gears up perfect your timing maybe off by a little bit and may bend your valves. If you do do it, just take you time and make sure everything is perfect before you put it all back together.

I guess it is a pretty big job, I was wondering....I called the local dealer and got a quote for 344.00 Canadian sine I am in Ontario, am I better off getting them to do the repair?

The 87-92 7M is a non-interference engine. You will not bend the valves if the valve timing is not correctly set.
Hardest part of replacing the timing belt is getting the crank bolt and crank pulley off. Then figureing out how to torque the crank bolt to 195 ft/lbs when you are done. It took me 10 minutes to replace my timing belt and timing belt tensioner, once the front of the motor was apart. Toyota timing belt: $38.37 Toyota timing belt tensioner: $136.28 Toyota timing belt tensioner spring: $6.51 US funds. |
